What are succulents?

As we have already said, succulents are not a family of plants, but are found in several families of plants. Succulents or succulents are adapted to store a lot of water and thus be able to survive arid climates, which is where these types of plants are found, this is achieved by storing water in their leaves, stems and roots. But to be able to store water in places where it is scarce, many succulents have a cover of fine and soft hairs called pubescence, which manages to retain the morning dew.

Thanks to their resistance characteristic they do not require much care and due to their beauty they are perfect to decorate our home. The agavóideas, apocináceas, crasuláceas or aizoáceas families have succulent species among them with very spectacular designs when it comes to decorating or creating our garden.

And although they survive very well in arid places, they do not succeed in thriving in very humid climates, so it is important to ensure when planting succulents, do it in places that are not very humid, but where they receive a lot of light since they must receive it in abundance for a long time, although there are also Keep in mind that not all succulents tolerate too many hours of direct sunlight.

Types of succulents

Haworthias

It is a large genus of succulents that are well known and that we use to decorate our home and build our garden. The leaves of this genus vary in each species, they can vary from 3 cm in diameter to 30, they also vary in texture and color; they can become pointed, rounded or blunt; They can be green, brown, reddish, variegated, lined, smooth or pubescent. Some species form compact groups and others grow in isolation. In this family there are some species perfect for interiors due to their resistance.

Aeonium

Aeoniums are a genus of succulents composed of about 75 species, they stand out for having quite large rosettes, between 20cm and 50cm in diameter, they are native to the Canary Islands and can also be found in Madeira, Morocco and East Africa.
It is divided into the genres Sempervivum, Greenovia, Aichryson and Monanthes; they are recognized by the similarity of their flowers. Its scientific name aeonium comes from the Greek aionion, which means always alive.

Orostachys

Orostachys are a genus of succulents with 39 described species, but only 12 are accepted, they can be biennial or perennial. With fibrous roots and basal leaves forming a rosette, they are generally small to medium in size measuring approximately 5 to 60 cm high.
It is one of the most unknown genera of succulents, although with highly decorative varieties.

Aloe

Aloe is very well known within succulent plants, in many countries it is also known as sabíla and is very famous for its medicinal properties. They are a genus of succulent 525 accepted species of more than 1000 described, it originates from the dry regions of Africa, Madagascar and the Middle East, but they have spread throughout the world.
Most Aloes form a rosette with large thick leaves that come out of a short stem, although in some species the stem is very long and branched.
Among the most used species for decoration are Aloe Arborescens with their red flowers, Aloe Ferox and Aloe Aristata.
